Broomsedge

For those who haven’t noticed yet, we’ve decided to document the plants and animals that are on our farm (both wild and planted) over the course of the year.  We welcome our friends and colleagues to add comments if they have any fun or useful anecdotes about the plants and animals we are profiling.

This morning it was 29 F and very sunny when I took my walk.  The broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus var. virginicus) that is found all throughout our old fields is at its most beautiful in conditions like this.  We love broomsedge because it comes up in our old fallow fields and provides perches, cover, and food for the grassland and shrubland dependent bird species that pass through or use our farm as habitat.
