View from the farm – Jan 22

Today’s view is cool and crisp.  Our abnormally warm winter is finally giving way to some below-normal temperatures.  We’re likely to hit the mid teens tonight and again later in the week, which is more in line with what a Piedmont winter should look like (occasionally).  I’m happy for the bulbs we have planted, which need some cool weather.  But it means extra work for me as I cover up the artichokes and Eucalyptus to keep them from succumbing to temps below their capacity to survive.

The monitoring walk today was a quick one.  I noticed that one weed, Veronica hederaefolia, is blooming already.  I wonder if the cold weather this week might set back this plant and help me with keeping my rows a little clearer as spring comes along?
