New seed starts for a new year

Now that our spring seeds have arrived from the various organic and heirloom specialty catalogs, we can focus on getting a head start on the growing season.  We planted trays of kale, lettuce, dill, parsley, and cilantro this past week that will eventually go out in our late winter/early spring beds.  And we planted nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), a great flower that also doubles as a nice addition to salads.

Tray of nasturtium starts just beginning to emerge.

We don’t yet have a greenhouse, so all of our starts are indoors under 3 large grow lights.  Hopefully in future years we can budget for a passive solar greenhouse to both give us more space and cut down on energy costs as we move forward with the farm.
