Veronica, the weedy beauty

Another beautiful weed on our farm is ivyleaf speedwell (Veronica hederifolia).  As with other spring weeds,  I most appreciate them in the late winter because they are the first splashes of color on the farm. In another month, I’ll be cursing them as they try to invade our cultivated beds.

Although references (like Weakley’s flora) have this plant blooming from March-June, at the farm it started blooming in late January along south facing walls and currently forms a solid carpet of blue and green in certain lawn areas that have good southern exposure.
