Spring-beauty to usher in a new year

The trout lilies were the first wildflowers on the property to begin to bloom, but the Eastern Spring-beauty (Claytonia virginica var. virginica) was not far behind.  In our walk down to the river yesterday we spotted the first spring-beauty and I captured some proof with my iphone (sorry for the lack of a macro lens, but you get the picture).  As the the two earliest wildflowers begin to bloom, we can turn our attention to the many transplants of parsley, cilantro, lettuce, kale, statice, and dill that have been holding their own in our raised beds but haven’t had enough sun and warmth to burst forth…
